Medical Student Sub-Internship in Emergency Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center

Welcome to our emergency department!  We are glad you have chosen to visit our site but would love to meet with you in person.

During your four week stay, come prepared to care for plenty of ill patients.  Come prepared to meet resident and attending physicians dedicated and excited to teach our specialty.  Ready yourself because we want to show you what emergency medicine is all about.

You will be working as part of the ED patient care team. Our team consists of  board certified emergency physicians, emergency medicine residents, emergency medicine RNs, emergency medicine PAs, other medical students, and PA students.

Our ED is divided into three main areas: the Red Team, Blue Team and Rapid Assessment Team. The Red team will see traumas and medically critical patients. The Blue team will see emergent patients, and the Rapid Assessment Team will see the urgent care cases. During your time in our ED you will be given the opportunity to work in all three areas. When working on the Red Team, you will be assigned patients by the senior resident in charge (RIC). You should always present your cases to the RIC first then present to the attending on duty.  When working on the Blue team and the Rapid Assessment Team you should pick up patients as they come into rooms. You should initially have one active patient at a time. As your experience grows you may have more than one active patients. You should be reading about each case you see in the ED. It is expected that you read during and after your shifts. The ED has access to Up-to Date, Micromedex, Poisiondex, and electronic emergency medicine texts. Many Emergency Medicine texts are available to you, in the hospital's medical library.

On your first day you should present to Sandie Luciano at 9am in the ED administrative suites. You should wear scrubs and your school's white coat with a visible ID. You should have bring a pen light, shears, and a sethoscope. See you then!

We love what we do, and we hope you will too.
