Program Description

The Physician Assistant Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program is a 24 month program administered by the Emergency Medicine Department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital within the NS LIJ Healthcare System.
PA Fellows are members of the Emergency Medicine Department and are involved in all aspects of care within E.D. The Fellowship is designed to provide both advanced didactic education and a focused, emergency medicine experience so that trainees and graduates will have the skills to provide high quality care. The Fellowship is attractive both for new PA graduates who are planning a career in Emergency Medicine and for those practicing physician assistants who wish to redirect their career. Even PA’s to enhance their knowledge and skills through post- graduate education.
The Fellows will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with excellent Emergency Medicine Attendings, in an academic, tertiary care environment and care for the most complex of patients or rare disease processes and multiple comorbidities.
This Fellowship is not designed to produce technicians. The goal is to train PA’S who are competent in offering a continuum of care for their patients. As a PA Fellow, you will serve as the primary contact when it comes to everyday patient care, be it completing history and physicals, ordering and interpreting appropriate labs, and diagnostic tests, implementing a treatment plan, and formulating a discharge plan, or responding to emergencies; however you are never alone. It is a symbiotic relationship between you and the junior and senior residents, the chief residents, and the E.D. attending, physician assistants, nurses and social workers that help make a difference in your patients’ lives.

Facilities
The Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) is an 829 bed non-profit tertiary care teaching hospital located in New Hyde Park, New York, on the border of Nassau and Queens Counties.   The community served comprises a population of 3.3 million. LIJ participates actively in the training of PA students from Stonybrook University, Touro College, and Hofstra University. In addition, LIJ has residency and specialty programs in most major disciplines.

We are on pace to treat more than 100K patients in the Long Island Jewish Medical Center Emergency Room, 30% of whom require admission to the hospital. This constitutes over 31% of the total annual admissions to the Medical Center. Long Island Jewish Medical Center is a designated level 1 pediatric trauma center. The department has state of the art trauma resuscitation areas, critical care rooms and examination spaces, including a separate Pediatric ED, Behavioral Health, and Fast Track.
Conference space is utilized within the Emergency Department and the LIJ Teaching Center. A comprehensive Emergency Medicine library is available within the department, supplemented with an extensive on-site CD-ROM emergency medicine and toxicology database.

North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset is a tertiary care facility that is one of the cornerstones of the health system, as well as an academic campus for the New York University School of Medicine. It is a Level One Trauma center for adults. The hospital has 731 beds and a staff of approximately 2,800 specialist and subspecialist physicians and physician assistants. It offers the most advanced care in all medical specialties, including open-heart surgery, neurosurgery, urology, and maternal-fetal medicine. Fast Track:
The role of the Physician Assistant in the fast track is to be full integrated in the care of their patients. The PA role is to recognize a patient, bring the patient to an open room, register the patient and order initial x-rays or blood work. It is meant to stream line the effectiveness of the E.R. and properly utilize the fast track area. Along with providing excellent patient care it is to be done in a timely manner.

CDU:
In this area the role of the Physician Assistant is to follow up on the work up that already began in the Emergency Room.   This area is for patients that present with chest pain, asthma exacerbation, hyper emesis, that require more time to complete their work up before a final decision can be determined.
This area is separate from the Main E.D. and requires a completely separate chart. Role of the P.A. will be to expedite care in this area. Patients are limited to 23 hours then a decision needs to be made. The P.A. needs to get sign out from the covering attending, and follow up on the remaining work up so a proper disposition can be made.

Main E.D.:
There are three sections in the Main E.D. The A side and the B side each function independently of each other. These too areas see majority of the Emergency Department patients. The Critical Care area is for the patients that require more time and care to be stabilized.
